This course is offered for those students who would like to start learning Hungarian as a foreign language.

The aim of the course is to provide basic language skills which may be used in everyday communication and also serve as a good basis for further language learning. Grammar and vocabulary is selected with a communicative approach and the new grammar structures will be practised in situational exercises. The general pragmatic rules of language use are taken into consideration throughout the course, making students able to communicate in a socially acceptable way even on a basic level. During the course we will use a coursebook (Lépésenként magyarul 1.) and other audiovisual materials.

Spelling and the alphabet

How to say hello


Formal and informal language use

Languages (the -ul / -ül suffix)

Introducing yourself

Free time activities


Intonation in questions

In a restaurant (Hungarian meals and eating habits)

Appearance and clothing

Time expressions


Arranging the location for a meeting

Talking about your family – possessive structures

Asking people to do things (Legyen szíves / Légy szíves + infinitive)

Expressing wishes (szeretne + infinitive)


In the market

The grammar component includes

Vowel harmony

The articles (a / az – the and egy – a / an)

The demonstrative pronoun (ez and az)

The plural of nouns

The plural of adjectives

Personal pronouns

Spatial suffixes (the relatively complex system which is based on the categories of directionality and spatial relations includes 9 cases resulting in 21 variations)

The -val / -vel suffix

The accusative case

The dative case

Verb conjugation in present tense (starting out from the verb to be, the curriculum includes the major morphological categories and the irregular verbs used frequently in everyday communication)

The definite conjugation (

The infinitive

Negation and word order in questions

Comparison with adjectives (comparative and superlative forms of adjectives)

The verbal prefixes (ki, be, fel, le, el, meg etc.)

The past tense of the verb van

Auxiliaries verbs with infinitives

Possessive structures and possessive endings
